The Greatest Need For Overwhelmed Introverts

With the worlds overwhelming surplus of distraction, activities and events, its a wonder any of us have time to contemplate life. For us introverts, we depend on quiet time and space to think.

Growing up in the 90's in the Seattle area, I looked forward to rainy days. I loved looking out of the window watching the raindrops trickle down the glass as I took the time to think and process life. On those special days it felt as if the world was forced to slow down and quiet itself.

Fast forward to life as an adult in 2026 and I find the present world very overwhelming. It's all too much, from social media, to the constant notifications of rings, pings and dings, and instant contact with the outside world.

For those of us who prefer a calmer and more relaxed pace, we must find a balance between this present world, and the needs of our nervous system. If you're anything like me you need quiet to slow down and reflect so you can process life and fully enjoy each day.

I used to think how great it would be if I could be an extrovert and get energy from being around people instead of being alone. Introversion was seen as a weakness to me, until I realized that the Lord Jesus Christ in perfect human form demonstrates to us the perfect balance of introversion and extroversion.

He spent most of his public ministry being surrounded by the multitudes. Yet here were times when he needed to be alone, like in Matthew 14:23 we find "he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was here alone.

It's a blessing to know that being introverted is not less desirable than being extroverted. They both have their place and our Lord demonstrated a perfect balance of them.

The world will never stop its onslaught of distraction and noise. As Christians we must find balance between necessary communication and interaction with technology, and enjoying a slower meaningful pace of life.

God did not intend for us to go through life as many people do today. Constantly consuming media, easily persuaded by mens ideas, and riding an emotional roller coaster as you scroll social media.

We must reflect daily on His goodness, His blessings, His Word, and what He is doing in our lives. How can we do that if we are running at a pace that leaves little room for thought?

We can't, so we must decide what is important and ditch the habits that steal our time, and leave us overwhelmed. If you are a fellow introvert, you know your energy is limited and how you feel after "doing too much".

So why not slow down and give yourself time to think, process and reflect on your life. To appreciate all that you currently have, and not let the world flood your head, heart and home with all of its distractions.

These days living in Phoenix, I may get one or two rainy days a year. I cherish these as very special gifts from God. They remind me of my childhood, to slow down, reflect, and thank Him for the little things. I strive to make my home a haven of rest from the world, for myself and my family. A place whose atmosphere allows for times of quiet reflection, yes even with 8 children. We all have a deep need for quietness, thought and time with God.

What about you? What reminds you to slow down? Do you make time for daily reflection and gratitude?
